scumm_boy: (Head Explodie)

Yesterday started out quite good. Slept in, went for a Java House breakfast, Stopped by [livejournal.com profile] margrock and [livejournal.com profile] naz_toronto's place for a Zine meeting. [livejournal.com profile] rexodusr was there, and we set up some stuff, wrote some other stuff, and watched some Robot Chicken and Venture Brothers. It was during the latter show that things went wrong...

I got an "aura". A little speck in my vision that kept growing larger. At it's worst, I couldn't see the TV due to the distortion in my vision. [livejournal.com profile] iolarah and I had to leave early because of it. On the way home, the migraine pain started. I ended up passed out on the livingroom futon for several hours as I waited for the happy brain pills to work.

Thankfully, today I feel great!

GAK! Classic migraine symptoms... The weather yesterday would have made an awesome trigger.

Did the green pills work? They've not worked with me when I've had an aura...

I find it ironic that the very weather that I was enjoying probably caused my migraine.

The green pills plus some Motrin that RJ gave me plus passing out cleared me up right as rain when I woke up at around 11.

Good stuff. Keep in mind, if they don't work (Motrin is just ibuprofen with caffeine) I have a few tricks up my sleeve still for killing the pain....

I would appriceate any tips and tricks you could supply. When the aura started to get really bad, I had about a liter of water and RJs Motrin, as the water/ibuprofin combo has worked to stave them off in the past.

You may want to add caffeine to the mix. Some people find caffeine really works.

Have you ever taken coedine before? If you're okay with it, you may want to condsider it as a next step if caffeine and ibuprofen doesn't work.

Also, I don't know if you are on a drug plan at work or not, but what my mom takes is a fairly inexpensive drug which is essentially ibuprofen with a kick. You need a prescription, but with your symptoms it shouldn't be much of a problem to get someone to prescribe.

I think this is only the second time you had one, am I right? If they're becoming more frequent, a trip to the doctor is always prudent just to rule out other causes.

I'll remember the Caffeine for next time... I even had some coffee brewed at home. Forgot about that completely.

I have had liquid coedine (when I had tonsilitis really bad a couple years back) and had no adverse reactions to it. I think [livejournal.com profile] iolarah might have some, but I'm not sure. I'll definatly look into it.

I don't have a drug plan here, but I'll definatly look into seeing a doctor about my migraines, and look into a perscription for that drug.

You are correct, that is the second migraine that has gone through the full aura/pain route. I had one a couple years back that was just the aura, no pain. Nothing since then, though. I'll have to look up a doctor in the next little while, methinks.

I do have some codeine around, in the form of 222s. They also have caffiene in them, and something else similar to ibuprofen...

Shit, I get the spot bit once ina while, too... But it never leads to pain. It starts in the middle of my vision, usually only in one eye, and gets bigger. Extreme cases cause the outer egde of my vision to start flashing and pulsating. I just call them "episodes".

Dunno why it happens, but I thought eye strain was a major culprit...

It's actually a mini-migraine. My grandfather gets auras with no pain. The culprit is the blood vessels constricting around the optic nerve, causing the vision to go wonky. A major cause of them is dehydration, which is why I usually drink water like a bastard when I see an aura coming on.

Huh... Learn something new every day. I'll give the water bit a try... I only get them maybe 2 or 3 times a year, though... And I just got one at work like a month ago.

I hope it helps. I'm just glad you don't get the afterpain like I usually do.

The technical term is an ocular migraine, and it often doesn't have any pain with it. Sometimes a headache will follow.

Eye strain is often a trigger of an ocular migraine. You should keep track of how often and when you're having them. If headache pain starts, then it's probably a good idea to go see a doctor....
