So I actually pondered what my priorities are for Scummbox.org. And I put them in my .plan.

[scummboy@pants scummboy]$ finger scummboy
Login: scummboy Name: Scumm Boy
Directory: /home/scummboy Shell: /bin/bash
On since Tue Apr 15 08:09 (EDT) on pts/0 from god.scummbox.org (messages off)
No mail.
Plan:
scummbox.org priorities:

* Upgrade to new OpenSSH package.
* Check out new Samba (patched security flaw)
* Consider upgrading to Mandrake 9.1 (newer packages)
* MORE STORAGE
      This is rapidly becoming a must, though smbmounting files off the 80gb drive in my workstation seems to have fixed a lot of that.
* More RAM
      192mb is just sorta sad.
* User Quotas
      Definatly a need currently. Hopefully a provider change will alleviate the need for this.

Lesser Things To Ponder:

* Consider installing/configuring Apache
      Doesn't make much sense currently... port 80 is blocked by Sympatico
* Consider new provider
      This is more for when I move out... Look into a corporate Rogers package
* Get rid of the Linksys Router
      It screws with SSH-based communications (proven via Google search by Hellsop). Look into Netgear.
* Ponder Multihoming scummbox and installing routing software on it
      This would eliminate the need for a router, period.

So does anyone (that reads that) have any ideas/comments? I need all the help I can get!

I am never ashamed of my girlfriend!

Its all just me pondering what to do to make scummbox better (not that there is any real flaw currently) :>

Re:

yeah but I dont know how to make it better because I am only technical in that I know HTML. I tried to teach myself php too but tripod doesnt let you use php so I couldnt see if I was doing it right

Ar har! Request to come aboard, Captain Jamie!

Seriously though, all looks good. A webserver would definitely be nice and I agree with your ram prognosis (I honestly never expected to meet someone running less than my measly 256). As for apache, go for it. I tried it and found it extremely hard to configure (mainly because I am lazy and when I couldn't get php running with it within a couple of tries I decided to just give up and go with Xitami instead). Serves my needs though I am quite sure it wouldn't be able to handle much of a load. Your plans appear promising however, I look forward to the future of Scummbox!

Re:

I shall get Apache running when I have a net.connnection that doesn't filter out port 80... having a website that is on a non-standard port is essentially useless.

The RAM is a must though :)

Run Apache on a different port. Include said port in any URLs you hand out. :8080 is unlikely to be filtered, f'rex. People won't be going there other than when you send them there, right? As a plus, 'bots and crawlers won't find it. =)

RAM is cheap, go ye forth!

Re:

The only problem with running apache on a non-standard port is that firewalled people will be unlikely to view it (especially work firewalls)
