So I've *finally* negotiated my 3 month trial contract, and it's better than a kick in the teeth :) There used to be more here, but common sense has won out.
you *do not* need to register. You can run a sole proprietor style company without registering with the government. You do not need either a BN or a GST # for this. It's a waste of $60. Trust me on this one, I did the same myself, for similar reasons a few years ago. "You need to register a business name with the Province of Ontario if you are not operating under your legal name. There is a $60 registration fee which you can pay on-line using your credit card." - from Canada Revenue Agency (https://www.businessregistration-inscriptionentreprise.gc.ca/dchmf/brom/bro/about-e.html)
I'm finally "officially" working at the ISP. I've negotiated the amount I'll be paid for the next three months, at which point I'll renegotiate depending on where I go!

Worry about a name if/when you decide to incorporate.

Given how long it's taken these guys to get to the contract stage, I wouldn't waste time right now. Rent is due on the 1st. :-)
